The Spider Zombie is a type of Zombie.
This zombie is able to climb walls and therefore overcome simple wall-defenses, hence its name. It has been speculated that it might be a because a different type of infection or radiation that gave the ability of climbing walls to these zombies. The real reason is still unknown or top-secret.
As of Alpha 11, Spider Zombies only spawn as scouts and will spawn a horde if not killed quickly. The appearance of one or more Spider Zombies leads to a horde when they scream, thus it's better to smelt or cook further from your base in another biome and keep a limit on torches in your area as both generate heat. Spider Zombies are only particularly threatening during the night, unless the horde they spawn generates a dog. A typical Spider Zombie scouting party can be identified as it consists of 3 Spider Zombies, though a single Spider Zombie can spawn a horde if provoked. Once they have spotted a player, they will scream and spawn hordes of zombies until killed. It is possible for a scouting party to appear soon or right after fighting a horde, making you have to fight two or more consecutive hordes if you are not careful.
If this zombie's corpse is looted you might find Empty Cans, Glass Panes, Rotting Flesh, Large Bones, Short Iron Pipes, Scrap Brass items, Scrap Lead items, Books, Painkillers, Wood Planks, Moldy Bread, Coffee Beans, Dukes Casino Tokens and/or Nails.
One headshot with a Pistol of over 50% durability is enough to kill a Spider Zombie. It has a very predictable head movement at day, so it shouldn't be difficult to kill. Using melee weapons against a Spider Zombie should be considered as a viable option, as they are more frail than the average Zombie.
During the night time they retain their climbing ability. Furthermore, their running behavior becomes a distinct running on all fours, while still being as fast as a standard zombie. This can make hitting one with a head shot rather difficult.
- The Spider Zombie can't climb fences, only through glitching.
- A loud scream sound is emitted upon death, so it is recommend that you get away from the Spider Zombie after killing it. This loud scream can alert other Zombies.
- A daytime spawn of Spider Zombies can allow for intentional horde spawning to rack up several zombie kills. A shotgun and a good melee weapon are advisable.
- A horde may spawn zombies on your roof or near vulnerable structures if you engage spiders near them. It is advisable to lead them some distance away from your structures to not risk them spawning on or near vulnerable parts.
